Small, spine-tipped projections, called papillae, on the bottom of their feet help them hold their slippery fish prey. The patterns of papillae are unique to each individual bird. So just as fingerprints identify people, Ospreys can be identified by their papillae prints! Shock Absorbers Needed Experiments on Red-headed Woodpeckers show that they have the highest g-forces (g’s) of all woodpeckers. When pecking wood, they hit trees with an impact velocity of up to 20 times per second about 12,000 times a day! This subjects the brain to a deceleration of around 1,000 g’s. Weight Trimmers Birds have several modified body parts that reduce their weight and make flying more efficient. First and foremost, they have hollow bones (pneumatic bones). To give strength and rigidity to the bones, there are struts, or branches, on the inside. In addition, birds have a strong, yet lightweight, beak. The beak tears and slices through food, functioning in much the same way as teeth. Birds also use their beaks to carry materials for nest building, as well as food to the babies in the nest. Birds are covered with a coat of feathers. Feathers are an efficient, lightweight body covering. Hollow bones, lightweight beaks and feathers help reduce the overall weight of birds, which, at the same time, gives them the freedom of flight. Not all birds, however, have hollow bones. Some aquatic birds, such as loons and penguins, have semisolid bones (semipneumatic bones), making them heavier than other birds of similar size. The added weight increases their density, which makes their bodies ride lower in water and decreases the amount of energy needed to swim underwater, where they spend much of their life.

Hard to rate I thought I would really enjoy this book. It started out strong and I was hooked by the idea that somewhere out there someone was living this story. Then it started to feel more like a predictable romance novel. When I finished I just felt cheated. Mr Sparks begins the story stating it is based on a true life experience. At the end he explains it was just a literary device he had been wanting to use. Really? Part of the allure to the story was thinking this was an actual real living story.I think I'm done with Nicholas Spark books.Needs editing, boring, sex scene at 47%, still boring Every Breath seriously needs an editor. There is so much “tell” and not enough “show” that the story moves at a glacial pace, compounded by an overreliance on long inner monologues. I grabbed Every Breath on a whim because my sister-in-law raves about The Notebook. I had not read any books by Nicholas Sparks nor seen any movie made from his books, but I like a good romance. Every Breath came up as #1 on Amazon under Clean & Wholesome Romance. I was a bit surprised when I hit a sex scene at 47%. Now, normally this wouldn’t bother me, but here I am about halfway through the book and almost nothing has happened. At all.To be fair, there was a little action. A man drove to the airport and thought of the danger it would be if it were night. He flew to the US. A lady visited her parents’ cottage by the shore. They met on the beach. They met at a restaurant. They talked a bit. They inhabited slow scenes with lots of inner monologues, lots of descriptions, and virtually no action. Finally something happened! These two people who have known each other about two days, I think (sorry, lost track with all the inner ramblings), are now madly in love and jumping into bed. I think he ate some olives in there somewhere. Did they eat their dinner that she was chopping veggies for? I was so bored I can't remember.The woman is trying to assess her six-year relationship with the man she loves because he’s so perfect; she intends to marry him and have the children she’s been yearning for as soon as they get over this rough spot in their relationship. The man she’s just met has no intentions of ever marrying, is sterile and can’t have kids, is a lone wolf who loves his solitary life with the exception of missing his son (begotten before he was sterile, sorry for any confusion there). And suddenly these two acquaintances know that they are deeply in love with each other. They knew upon seeing each other (she’s beautiful; his butt looks nice in tight jeans) how incredible their connection is. They share a few stories and a dinner and are now presumably rocking toward happily ever after. Or at least, the bedroom.Something must happen in the last half of the book, but I don’t really care. I’m so bored and irritated with the overkill on inner monologues, the plodding pace, plus the hackneyed instalove cliché, that my eye rolls gave me a headache. (Confession: it was the frustration with the story that gave me the headache, not the eye rolling.) Every Breath is a DNF for me.ETA: Another reviewer said they read the entire book and in the author note at the end, Nicholas Sparks admits the entire premise of the book is a lie. The book is NOT based on a true story. That's despicable, imo. Before buying the book, I read the intro as part of the sample, I double-checked that that the author had signed and dated the intro, just as authors do for true introductory notes, and I had checked that the Kindred Spirit mailbox is real (it is). I did all that because I wanted to make sure it was based on a true story before I read it. That premise drew me to the book. To find out the whole intro is a dramatic fabrication, a literary device, makes me glad that I didn't finish the book and find that at the end. Nicholas Sparks deliberately played and manipulated us readers with that intro. Not cool.Just okay, but not the best of his novels Typically like his books but this one was just plain blah. Too predictable, too many paragraphs, pages spent on the physical intimacy of the characters. I almost didn’t finish this but figured I had spent a few hours reading and decided to push through it. I did enjoy descriptions of the scenery though.

By now, he knows so many pokemon that I can no longer keep track!The guide is fairly up to date, and includes Sun and Moon (Alola) pokemon such as Lunala or Lycanroc. This makes the book really thick, as the 800+ pokemon take almost 500 pages! Each of them has a very good level of detail, including their region, evolutions, size/weight and some interesting facts. We could not be happier with this guide... or maybe we could, if it included Zeraora! (This mythical pokemon was introduced on April 2018, probably after the guide was printed, and it is the only missing one we have found).Overall, a extremely recommended guide for all the pokemon-lover kids out there!All current Pokémon in one book! The most current handbook with every region including Alola. Lots of great information on all Pokémon, but if you’re looking to know how to evolve certain Pokemon and at what levels Pokémon learn moves, this isn’t the right book.

Emotional, realistic journey! I’m sitting here at 3:57 am with tears running down my face trying to figure out what to put in my review to convey my feelings. For me, if a writer can bring me to true tears, it’s a sign of a fantastic book. I loved this book! It takes the reader through every gamut of emotion. I felt sympathy for the young girl (Emma) who lost her mother & then was dumped on a stern grandmother by her immature father. I admired the mother Emma became for for sticking to her principles instead of doing the “easy” thing. Genevieve is the one I couldn’t put a lock on. I admired her courage in going on after losing one son & her husband. I sympathized with her grief but yet was appalled by her treatment of Clark & Emma. These characters were all so well developed, it felt like I was living their story along with them. The descriptions & dialogue bring you right into the scenes with them. I had planned to start reading this book as soon as I received it but decided to hold off until the weekend. I wanted to be able to lose myself in it. Once I opened the cover, I didn’t put the book down until I was finished. I’ve read everything Ms. Higgins has published & this isn’t one of her typical romances but it’s so much more! I don’t feel that I’ve done this book justice but suffice it to say, I loved it & in a week or two will be rereading it to capture anything I missed the first time.A Powerful Lesson in Parenthood, Sacrifice and Forgiveness... That's why she's my favorite. This was nothing like that. Her writing has changed. I guess she is trying on new shoes and going in a different direction... but I wish she would come back to her original style. Sad face...

I wanted to know more and decided to buy this book, and it was one of the best decisions I could have made. It describes every part of a car, and easily enough so people without much background knowledge can understand, but thoroughly enough so that you learn it well. It even has many pictures so that you can not only get a good description, but you can learn what it looks like and where it is in a car. This book may not be good for mechanics, but if you are just starting to learn about cars or only know the basics this book will be great for you!
