Gr 8 Up—After Starr and her childhood friend Khalil, both black, leave a party together, they are pulled over by a white police officer, who kills Khalil. The sole witness to the homicide, Starr must testify before a grand jury that will decide whether to indict the cop, and she's terrified, especially as emotions run high. By turns frightened, discouraged, enraged, and impassioned, Starr is authentically adolescent in her reactions. Inhabiting two vastly different spheres—her poor, predominantly black neighborhood, Garden Heights, where gangs are a fact of life, and her rich, mostly white private school—causes strain, and Thomas perceptively illustrates how the personal is political: Starr is disturbed by the racism of her white friend Hailey, who writes Khalil off as a drug dealer, and Starr's father is torn between his desire to support Garden Heights and his need to move his family to a safer environment. The first-person, present-tense narrative is immediate and intense, and the pacing is strong, with Thomas balancing dramatic scenes of violence and protest with moments of reflection. The characterization is slightly uneven; at times, Starr's friends at school feel thinly fleshed out. However, Starr, her family, and the individuals in their neighborhood are achingly real and lovingly crafted. VERDICT Pair this powerful debut with Jason Reynolds and Brendan Kiely's All American Boys to start a conversation on racism, police brutality, and the Black Lives Matter movement.—Mahnaz Dar, School Library Journal “As we continue to fight the battle against police brutality and systemic racism in America, THE HATE U GIVE serves as a much needed literary ramrod. Absolutely riveting!” (Jason Reynolds, bestselling coauthor of ALL AMERICAN BOYS)“Angie Thomas has written a stunning, brilliant, gut-wrenching novel that will be remembered as a classic of our time.” (John Green, bestselling author of The Fault in Our Stars)“Fearlessly honest and heartbreakingly human. Everyone should read this book.” (Becky Albertalli, William C. Morris Award-winning author of SIMON VS. THE HOMO SAPIENS AGENDA)“This is tragically timely, hard-hitting, and an ultimate prayer for change. Don’t look away from this searing battle for justice. Rally with Starr.” (Adam Silvera, New York Times bestselling author of MORE HAPPY THAN NOT)“With smooth but powerful prose delivered in Starr’s natural, emphatic voice, finely nuanced characters, and intricate and realistic relationship dynamics, this novel will have readers rooting for Starr and opening their hearts to her friends and family. This story is necessary. This story is important.” (Kirkus Reviews (starred review))“Though Thomas’s story is heartbreakingly topical, its greatest strength is in its authentic depiction of a teenage girl, her loving family, and her attempts to reconcile what she knows to be true about their lives with the way those lives are depicted—and completely undervalued—by society at large.” (Publishers Weekly (starred review))“Beautifully written in Starr’s authentic first-person voice, this is a marvel of verisimilitude as it insightfully examines two worlds in collision. An inarguably important book that demands the widest possible readership.” (Booklist (starred review))“Pair this powerful debut with Jason Reynolds and Brendan Kiely’s ALL AMERICAN BOYS to start a conversation on racism, police brutality, and the Black Lives Matter movement.” (School Library Journal (starred review))“The Hate U Give is an important and timely novel that reflects the world today’s teens inhabit. Starr’s struggles create a complex character, and Thomas boldly tackles topics like racism, gangs, police violence, and interracial dating. This topical, necessary story is highly recommended for all libraries.” (Voice of Youth Advocates (VOYA) (starred review))“Thomas has penned a powerful, in-your-face novel that will similarly galvanize fans of Kekla Magoon’s How It Went Down and Jason Reynolds and Brendan Kiely’s All American Boys.” (Horn Book (starred review))

Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed.

Soon afterward, his death is a national headline. Some are calling him a thug, maybe even a drug dealer and a gangbanger. Protesters are taking to the streets in Khalil’s name. Some cops and the local drug lord try to intimidate Starr and her family. What everyone wants to know is: what really went down that night? And the only person alive who can answer that is Starr.

But what Starr does—or does not—say could upend her community. It could also endanger her life.

And don't miss On the Come Up, Angie Thomas's powerful follow-up to The Hate U Give.

Life Changing I'm going to start with this--I just finished this book a little less than an hour ago, and I can already say that it has changed my life.Angie Thomas's book about 16-year-old Starr Carter left me speechless and crying for so many reasons, and I'm not sure I can even explain why adequately. Starr herself is written perfectly. She's a high school junior who loves basketball, used to have a massive crush on a Jonas brother, and collects sneakers. She also loves her family, even when they embarrass or frustrate her, is a good student at the private school she attends with almost exclusively rich, white kids (one of whom is her boyfriend), and helps at her dad's community grocery store when she can. However, her life is very different from the ones her friends at school live. Starr is the only black girl in her junior class, lives in a poor black neighborhood that sees more than its fair share of gang violence, is the daughter of an ex-gang member who served time in prison, and saw one of her two best friends killed in a drive-by when she was ten years old.And on the night she is with her other childhood best friend, Khalil, when he is shot in the back by a police officer, despite being unarmed and not doing anything to provoke the officer in any way, she finds herself in the middle of all the fallout from the shooting while still grieving Khalil's death.I'm more than a little ashamed to admit that I'm a privileged white woman in a tiny, primarily white community who has never really even given a ton of thought to the Black Lives Matter movement. I have heard the news, and I felt a piece of the injustice of it all, but prior to reading The Hate U Give, I had never really tried to imagine what the black community really felt. I'm still a privileged white woman in a tiny, primarily white community, which means that I will never really be able to understand what the black community feels, but I'm trying, and I'm trying so much harder than I ever did before. As far as a review, I'm not sure what to say. This is young adult fiction, so I knew it wouldn't be the level of writing to which I'm accustomed. However, Angie Thomas still did an excellent job of creating living, breathing characters and thought-provoking text that made me grab my highlighter many times as I read. The teenagers spoke exactly as teenagers do without coming across as cliché at all, and I usually find that adult young adult writers either try TOO hard to make teenage characters sound like teenagers OR they make them sound entirely too grown up (I'm looking at you in The Fault in Our Stars, John Green. Yeah. I said it.). Thomas, however, nailed it.Meanwhile, The Hate U Give is filled with the kind of profound statements that I never expected from young adult fiction, but they still felt completely natural and appropriate--statements that made me, as an adult, stop and question my own behaviors and thoughts. Statements like the following:"I always said that if I saw it happen to somebody, I would have the loudest voice, making sure the world knew what went down. Now I am that person, and I'm too afraid to speak.""The truth casts a shadow over the kitchen--people like us in situations like this become hashtags, but they rarely get justice.""That's the problem. We let people say stuff, and they say it so much that it becomes okay to them and normal for us. What's the point in having a voice if you're gonna be silent in those moments you shouldn't be?"When I finished this book a little while ago, I sobbed like I haven't at the end of a book in a LONG time. I sobbed for Khalil and his community, but more so for the list of real names at the end (that's not a spoiler...promise). There were plenty of moments in the book that made me chuckle a little that helped break up the heaviness of the book (especially when DeVante, Seven, and Starr start making fun of white people, because, let's be honest, everything they said was true), but the weight of the truth this book made me see hit me like a ton of bricks. I'm white. I never have to worry about one of my sons being killed by the police simply for their skin color. And I will never understand that particular reality. Instead, I have been living inside my safe little bubble where I believed that ALL police officers are good and ALL police officers are just trying to do their jobs and racism is really not THAT bad in our country. I never allowed myself to see that SOME police officers are downright racist, and SOME police officers are scared of young, black men simply because they are young, black men, and people of color ARE treated differently, and ANY racism IS that bad.The Hate U Give started changing all that. It enabled me to step into the shoes of a 16-year-old black girl who saw her childhood best friend shot simply because he was young, black, and in a neighborhood with a bad reputation. It also enabled me to see that the lives behind the news headlines are so much more complicated than I am often led to believe, but Angie Thomas never did any of that in a way that placed all the blame on the police. The blame was definitely there, but Starr also acknowledges that there are still a lot of good police officers who don't agree with the actions of their colleagues, and although she helped me to understand the sentiment behind rioting, she also acknowledges that the damage done by rioting is usually to her own community only. And underneath it all, Angie Thomas makes it clear that Starr's community had its own problems from within that were not the fault of the police at all. Instead of placing blame on ANYONE, Angie Thomas is making readers see that there are definitely two sides to every story, and for most of us, we have only REALLY heard one of them.

MEGAN GILMORE is the author of Everyday Detox and No Excuses Detox, and the creator and recipe developer behind Detoxinista.com, a website that makes healthy living easier and more accessible. She is a certified nutritionist consultant and health coach, and her recipes have been featured in the Guardian as well as Shape and Clean Eating magazines. INTRODUCTION About the Recipes  I’ve developed all of the recipes in this book with optimum nutrition, flavor, and speed in mind. They call for easy-to-find, real-food ingredients that maximize your vitamin and mineral intake, while also taking calories into account, in case weight loss is one of your goals, too. To make each meal as healthy as possible, I’ve included a generous serving of vegetables in every recipe. If you or someone you’re cooking for isn’t a vegetable lover (yet), the Instant Pot actually offers an advantage. Because pressure cooking tends to turn vegetables to mush if you cook them for too long, it’s easy to sneak vegetables into your meals in unexpected ways. For example, rather than using a lot of heavy cream and an expensive blender to make a cream sauce, you can totally dissolve a head of cauliflower to create a creamy mac ’n’ cheese sauce. And when you cook sweet potatoes in the same pot as the chocolate cake, the potatoes become a soft and creamy base for a rich, chocolate frosting to top the cake. Vegetables have never tasted so good! If you have special dietary needs beyond just wanting to eat healthier, this book arms you with plenty of options. I’ve included gluten-free options for every single recipe that contains gluten, without the need for special gluten-free flour mixes, and all recipes are naturally sweetened (meaning there’s no refined sugar) to help keep your blood sugar levels balanced, too.  If you follow a vegan or vegetarian diet, almost every recipe that calls for meat or fish also has a tested vegan substitute so you won’t miss out on any delicious flavors. Nearly every sauce in the book is already vegan, so you can easily swap the protein to suit your needs, or use up any ingredients that you have on hand. If you do eat meat, try one of the meatless variations every now and then. It adds variety to your diet and helps you cut back on your weekly grocery bills.Since dairy products can cause digestive issues for many people, I’ve also limited the use of dairy in these recipes. If you’re in this camp, feel free to omit cheese when it is called for in a recipe, or use the vegan variations for a totally dairy-free dish.No matter what your dietary needs are, you’ll find plenty of healthy recipes to enjoy in this collection. To help you get started, I’ve included a list of my favorite pantry staples and kitchen tools to make shopping and cooking easier. If some of the ingredients in these recipes are unfamiliar, take a look at the ingredients and substitutions section for some simple swaps. And if you’ve never used an Instant Pot before, check out my easy reference guide. It walks you through the operation of your pressure cooker and helps you troubleshoot the most common problems. Let’s get started!

Eating healthy gets a whole lot easier with this delicious collection of 75 recipes--each one photographed--for nutritious and satisfying meals made quickly in your electric pressure cooker, all developed by a certified nutritionist and cookbook author for maximum health and flavor.

In The Fresh and Healthy Instant Pot Cookbook, Megan Gilmore presents recipes that use easy-to-find, whole-food ingredients for simple weeknight meals from morning to night--through the revolutionary cooking power of the Instant Pot, an electric, programmable multicooker. There are gluten-free options for each recipe, and all recipes are free of refined sugar and many of the most common food allergens, yet don't scrimp on flavor. With dishes like Korean Chicken Bowls, Eggplant Parmesan Bake, Peanut Butter Crunch Granola Bars, Flourless Banana Oat Bread, and One-Pot Chocolate Cake and Frosting, following a healthy diet while enjoying your favorite whole foods has never been more achievable. Every recipe is photographed in this highly visual and information-rich collection, and also includes nutritional information (calories, fat, carbs, fiber, and protein) and detailed timing for prep, coming to pressure, cook time, and release time.

I would buy an Instant Pot, so I could make these recipes. Hi everyone! I was a recipe tester for Megan over the last 6 months for this book, so I've made/helped fine-tune at least 3/4 of the recipes. Before testing for this book, I had purchased an Instant Pot, and had liked when I used it. One reason it was dormant was I only used it for stews, which admittedly were delicious. I didn't... care enough... to invest the time to learn how to reliably cook other healthy things with this new tool when I was already bffs with my stove. Luckily Megan came to my rescue, and did the bulk of that work for me! Most notably, Megan helped me cook *good* chicken breast in the IP, something I **really** couldn't do before.I cannot stress how amazing this round of recipe testing has been, because most of the recipes in this book can be made at the same time, in the same pot, with minimal active maintenance. That's the biggest time saver. After you account for pressurizing and de-pressurizing, on average, I'd say the addition of the IP saves between 10-20m*, but your biggest gains are the ability to do other things while you cook.Every recipe in this book is also gluten free, although some have wheat options. I can confirm that Megan originally wrote all recipes gluten free, then added a few gluten-full modifications, for those who prefer them.RE How this book compares to her first two: It has more meat-centric dishes, which I appreciate. It also feels more "comfort food-y", and indulgent, although the nutritional content is comparable to her previous books (and blog). I think her second book, No Excuses Detox, is still my favorite. But this book is *absolutely* worth purchasing, even if you have the other two, because the recipes are sufficiently different (but clearly from Megan!).I'm sure this will be a staple in my kitchen for years to come.My favorite recipes in the book are:1. Cheeseburger salad with special sauce (the sauce is PERFECTION. I would buy the book for this recipe alone)2. Cauliflower mac-and-cheese (FYI I don't like cauliflower)3. Creamy tomato soup4. Lazy falafel wraps*The time saved for legume/dried bean recipes can be on the order of hours. Megan's hummus recipe (from dried chickpeas) shaved off hours.not great for paleo/low carb I was really excited to learn some new instant pot techniques from this cookbook but unfortunately I can't cook most of the meals. At least on instagram she pushed that the book would be good for low carb but I don't really see that it is. This is definitely great for vegan/vegetarians though and I gifted the book to a friend who eat that way. The problem with this cookbook being mostly grains and legumes is that while normally I could cut it out or find a sub, you can't really do that with a pressure cooker. The timing is really specific depending on what's in it and since I was hoping to learn from this book, I'm not really getting that benefit. The recipes I was able to try were really good and I'm now more confident when cooking vegetables or doing pot-in-pot cooking in the instant pot. But like I said, the vast majority of the recipes don't work for my lifestyle.Ho. Ly. Crap... Amazing. I've been looking forward to this book since preorders started and it has not disappointed. I've had an instant pot that I've been terrified and too intimidated to use, but these directions were so clear and easy to understand. Not only that, but there were explanations as to why certain things are done so it is also helping me to learn how to use the pot if I want to freestyle.Tonight we made the Mongolian Beef Stir Fry and it was amazing. Better than takeout. Even my husband who is not a fan of anything "healthy" is already talking about us making more to freeze in bulk to he can have it throughout the week without needing to cook more

Where the Crawdads Sing Pdf

ISBN: B078GD3DRG
Title: Where the Crawdads Sing Pdf
#1 New York Times Bestseller
A Reese Witherspoon x Hello Sunshine Book Club Pick

"I can't even express how much I love this book! I didn't want this story to end!"--Reese Witherspoon

"Painfully beautiful."--The New York Times Book Review

"Perfect for fans of Barbara Kingsolver."--Bustle

For years, rumors of the "Marsh Girl" have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet town on the North Carolina coast. So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. But Kya is not what they say. Sensitive and intelligent, she has survived for years alone in the marsh that she calls home, finding friends in the gulls and lessons in the sand. Then the time comes when she yearns to be touched and loved. When two young men from town become intrigued by her wild beauty, Kya opens herself to a new life--until the unthinkable happens.

Perfect for fans of Barbara Kingsolver and Karen Russell, Where the Crawdads Sing is at once an exquisite ode to the natural world, a heartbreaking coming-of-age story, and a surprising tale of possible murder. Owens reminds us that we are forever shaped by the children we once were, and that we are all subject to the beautiful and violent secrets that nature keeps.

Disappointing This book had so many fantastic reviews. I was looking forward to reading it but quickly became disillusioned. I'm from NC and have never heard anyone talk with the type of accents Ms. Owens chose for her characters. It seems like a small thing but it was extremely distracting, and eventually became ridiculous, especially because the characters somehow switched back and forth between speaking like Mark Twain's Jim to perfect English. It made me wonder if the author has ever been to our fair state. The story was good enough, albeit predictable, and it's obvious the author did her research on marsh life. I learned quite a few wildlife facts that were interesting. The conversations just kept me wrinkling up my nose with distaste and I ended the book on a sour note.OMG Wonderful Wonderful! My favorite book of the year by far. So beautifully written. No skimming over sections in this book. I devoured every single word. I laughed, I cried (a lot) and most importantly thought differently about life - mine and everyone else's. I became the character of Kya, desperately alone and forced to try to eke out an existence on her own in the marshes. The marshes are their own separate character, but despite the fact that I am freaked out by insects and mud and most other creepy crawlies, I could actually imagine myself enjoying the Carolina experience, hard as it was. You will root for Kya, I did, sometimes shouting out loud- You Go Girl!!!!! I read this book in one day and can't stop thinking about it. There are several clues to the surprise ending if you pay attention to the details. This is a KEEPER!A moving story about survival in a way that most of us can't imagine. Wow! I just finished reading Where the Crawdads Sing. And I will say it again, Wow! This books is so filled with emotion. Kya, the main character, is trying to survive by herself from a young age. She has been abandoned by those who should teach her, guide her, protect her. She has to fend for herself. Two men come into her life and teach her about the good and bad in life. I only keep few book's that I know I will read again. This is staying in my library.

Title: ASVAB Secrets Study Guide Pdf ASVAB Test Review for the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery
Author: ASVAB Exam Secrets Test Prep
Published Date: 2010-08
Page: 176

Our ASVAB Study Guide Is Unlike Any OtherIf you'd like to get the ASVAB score you deserve, to quit worrying about whether your score on the ASVAB is "good enough," and to beat the test taking game, then this might be the most important message you read this year. Our comprehensive study guide for the ASVAB is written by our ASVAB experts, who painstakingly researched the topics and the concepts that you need to know to ace your ASVAB. Our original research into the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB), offered by the United States Military Entrance Processing Command, reveals the specific content areas and the essential skills that are critical for you to know on the ASVAB. We've taken the information and developed a study guide that is guaranteed to help you be successful on the ASVAB.Now, we know you may be skeptical, so let us give you three good reasons we can back up what we claim:The Three Reasons To Believe What We SayThe First Reason:Our company's name is Mometrix Test Preparation, and we have a team of standardized test researchers who have worked on developing our study guide for the ASVAB. The standards for who gets to work on the team are very strict- we demand the best for our customers, and only those who met our exacting standards made the cut. The dedicated research staff have years of combined experience in mastering the content and skills necessary to succeed on the toughest exams. The Second Reason:Some academic studies have revealed that test takers do not really benefit from the traditional test preparation process. But we knew there had to be a solution- if test takers were not doing well on the ASVAB despite high intelligence, there had to be a set of secret keys to the test that would open the door of success for these test takers. We believe we have succeeded in finding the secret keys of the exam. What we found was surprising, and in some cases ridiculously simple once explained to the average test taker. We put the findings together in a thorough, concise study guide that we believe allows any test taker, at any skill level, to improve his or her results dramatically with a minimum of effort. The Third Reason:We created the product in part because we were frustrated by the options available to test takers who really wanted to do well on the ASVAB.A common approach is to TEACH the material, instead of TEACHING THE TEST. That's not necessarily good enough for the ASVAB- you have to know how to apply the knowledge. Most test takers already have a general knowledge of the material that will be covered on the exam. One reason some test takers do well on the day of the test is that they have made the critical connection between the material they learned and how to use the material to succeed on the ASVAB.Our guide addresses the difference between merely knowing the material and knowing how to use the material to perform on test day. You're going to save time, money, and aggravation. You'll learn to avoid the mistakes and the bad strategies that you've been vulnerable to. --Just for starters, here are some ways our product can help your score on the ASVAB...The Exclusive Test Taking TechniquesNow, you're probably wondering how and why we can do all the things we claim.Let us explain. Before we go any further, let us clarify what ASVAB Secrets is not. It is not a stale rehash of all of the things you have already learned in the past.ASVAB Secrets is our exclusive collection of the tips and the information that we have specially selected to give you the best results on the ASVAB for the least time spent studying. It's written in everyday language and is easy to use.We cover the 5 essential skills necessary to do well on the ASVAB, plus comprehensive reviews covering the Word Knowledge, Paragraph Comprehension, Arithmetic Reasoning and Mathematics Knowledge tests individually.Don't take our word for it. Listen to what our customers say about other Mometrix test preparation products.I have just retaken my ASVAB and I scored a 72, which is way better than my previous score of 35. I had this program for only 3 days and I just want to say that I can't believe how well it worked. Sincerely, Mandy C.I purchased your ASVAB Secrets file, and I just wanted to let you know that I got a 99% on my test. I just got my job of choice today of Military Intelligence Analyst, and I am now on the road to my future career in the CIA or NSA. I just want to thank you again, and hope you have continued success in your ventures. Sincerely, Paul L. U.S. Army (Intel AnalystMy name is Chris. I used the ASVAB Secrets study guide for five days. I am ex-military retaking the ASVAB to reenlist. I just want to say thank you for developing this study guide. My test score in 1988 was 51, today my test score is 89. I would just like to add that I have an A.A.S. Degree, but no math skills above basic high school math. This is where I was lacking, the study guide made it so easy to understand. Like you said this program is worth 100's of dollars. To me 1,000's!! THANKS, Chris G.I just had to thank you guys for the test prep! I am a former Marine that decided to reenter the military and much to my surprise, I had to retake the ASVAB!!! The last time I even looked at a math or English problem had to be at least 6 or seven years ago. I bought the guide as a last minute prep, I mean maybe 5 hours before the test. Like I said, I didn't even know I had to retake the test and had ZERO preparation! The job I wanted required a pretty high GT score and I was nervous about even passing the test let alone receiving the score I needed. I read the guide through only once before test time and needless to say, the only way I passed was thanks to your refresher!! Sgt.
