Hahahahaha - what was I thinking? In 1989, I tried to read Satanic Verses, and while years later I sort of got through it, it was at such a low level of comprehension that I should be embarrassed to even use the word "read" in this context.So a few years after that and I was offered this review copy of Rushdie's new book, and I decided I'm a smart person now, and very well read, and I can certainly appreciate Salman Rushdie's obvious writing skills as who I am today.The answer remains "no, I can not." That's entirely my fault - my interests are nonfiction or fairly straightforward fiction as opposed to experimental or stylistic fiction like Rushdie has generally been known for. No doubt one of his books would prepare me for his style in a slightly more accessible way but I haven't read it. I probably should give "Joseph Anton" a try.So this reminded me of Marlon James "A Brief History of Seven Killings" that was hugely praised and award winning and that I totally couldn't connect with no matter how hard I tried. In a similar vein with this book, I tried to start at the beginning, then I tried to start in the middle, and I tried to jump around and I couldn't figure out what was going on, or even what I was supposed to be thinking.Look - I did not give it any sort of truly honest effort. I gave up. It was too hard, too detailed, too stylized - it demanded an investment from the reader that I am simply not prepared to give. So if you think I sound like you, then you're probably not going to be the audience for this book.But - if you're ANGRY at me, and you think I'm a big joke and an uneducated lazy rube - THEN maybe the book IS for you, because you're the type of reader who will go into Rushdie with your eyes wide open in a way that I didn't.So I tried, I failed, maybe I'll try again one day, but this book's just not for me.I'm giving it four stars because OBVIOUSLY he can write at a supreme quality - I would say every sentence went through ten drafts. Any oblique meaning on his part is totally intentional - he wants this to be an off-kilter Don Quitote experience...so it's no accident. It IS well-done, but it is NOT for casual readers or the hoi polloi like me.Avoid. A Complete Bore To begin let me say I have long been an admirer of Salman Rushdie, and consider him the finest writer in the English language today. His new novel, an homage to Cervantes Don Quixote, is a dense maze of interwoven stories. In it an elderly Indian man called Quichotte living in the US, who spends his days immersed in watching television, falls in love with a beautiful young drug addled Indian television superstar (a younger, more svelte version of Oprah). She becomes his Dulcinea. Quichotte, along with his son Sancho will make their way across the country to woo her. Interspersed in the Quichotte story there is the story of the author of Quichotte, a third rate writer of spy novels who has decided to try his hand at another genre. Insert into the Quichotte story the story of an Indian pharmaceutical millionaire called Dr.Smile who is making big bucks off of opiods. If it all sounds like a muddle be assured it is. Even worse it is a complete bore. I had no interest in any of the characters. Multiple times I wanted to abandon this book, yet I soldiered on. But even worse it is a great slap at America as a racist cauldron of stupid, evil white people. If you are new to Rushdie please avoid this book and begin with the magnificent Midnight's Children.

A clumsy review, from someone who didn't expect this book to matter.... I've been staring at the computer screen for about 10 minutes now, trying to start this review, and having no idea how to do so. I just can't make the words come out, and writing the review terrifies me, and makes me feel a little ill. You see, I didn't buy, or read this book because I know the author or her work. I did both because the content sounded interesting, and because I needed my next big review. Yes, I read this book so I could review it, which is where the ill part enters. I started working toward being an Amazon Top 1000 reviewer about a year ago. Not because I really cared about the rank...it was just a goal. Something intangible I could work toward. And I chose it, because sad though it is, my reviews on Amazon and Goodreads are the last place in this entire world where I am willing to communicate, in any capacity, with other human beings. They're all I have left.I live a sad life. I have no friends and I'm lonely... So lonely that as I type this I feel like crying, even though I accepted this as my reality a long time ago. I cancelled facebook two years ago. I lost my last real friend three years ago. I struggle to call and make appointments because it requires talking to strangers, and for this reason I also can't go to the grocery store, or the gas station, or any other list of a hundred places that normal people go to have normal lives.You see, I decided five years ago that I was done with fitting in, and that I'd rather be lonely and alone, than to continue immersing myself in a world I found caustic.Everywhere I looked people seemed to be shouting, trying to make their voices heard. The most recent clever story on facebook. The most wittily stated opinion. I didn't see kindness, I saw intolerance and rudeness. I saw people ripping each other down through the medium of social media because they didn't have to look that person in the face, and see how their comments hurt them. Then I watched as that attitude seemed to make people less tolerant in the real world as well. I wanted no part of it anymore. From that point on I was standing alone, and that was that. It seemed like a good idea at the time, but as the years have passed, I've cut myself so far off from humanity that it feels like I'm the only person left in my world. It hurts, SO much, but I don't know how to undo it. I don't know how to go back.At least...I didn't. I know this review is already too long, and all I've done is clumsily muddle my way through it—attempting to express something I don't even know if others will understand. This is frustrating for me, because I don't want to talk about myself, and doing so is terrifying, particularly after so many years of silence. But I didn't know how else to express the impact this book had on me, without first talking about how much pain I've been in, and how nefarious my reasons for reading it in the first place. I got the "standing alone" part down pat. I did that years ago. The part I couldn't find, that maybe I'd never have found on my own, is the part where I know how to belong to something again. Join the world. Feel a connection to life and humanity.I cried just about the entire duration of this book. I got it because it sounded "interesting", but I feel like it opened up a hole in the side of my sad little world. I didn't think it would apply to me, but it's changed my life. I expected to write an honest, clinical review discussing its contents from a dispassionate point of view. But instead, here I am, still clumsily attempting to convey my feelings in the hopes that some part of this review might encourage even one other person to read this book.Everyone should read this book. Everyone who wants to stand alone, but still belong. Everyone who already is alone, and wants to be a part of something again. Everyone who is tired of a humanity that is separated. Give it a shot. If nothing else, get the sample chapters, and see if there's something in it that might speak to you.And if my review is clumsy, I sincerely apologize. Please don't let that turn you off from the book. It changed my life, and I think it can do as much for many.EDIT: It's been 6 months since I wrote this review, and when I said this book changed my life, it did. Oh, how it did! I got into therapy. I've made some friends who share my interests, and even many of my anxieties. I no longer feel lonely or threatened. If anyone out there struggles as I did, please know that help is available, and change is possible. All it takes is one moment that changes all other moments. For me, that was this book! Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for all of you who have supported me, and supported each other. Humanity is far more wonderful than I once believed!!!

Disappointing I heard great things about this author, and after reading the reviews on this book I purchased it & was looking forward to reading it. Unfortunately, I was disappointed. There wasn't one character that was likable, and there wasn't really any overall character development in general. I found myself getting irritated with the protagonist, rather than sympathizing with her. I have read lots of different types of novels and I almost always am able to connect with the protagonist on some level, and I was disappointed that I wasn't able to with this novel. The story was also a little dry- it took me longer than normal to read this.whining with friends I really don't understand the excitement and buzz surrounding this book. Allowing for the cultural differences of my American heritage vs the Irish setting of the novel, the protagonists still seem like entitled, self-important, lazy kids with low morals. Their high opinions of themselves and judgemental attitudes about everyone elses homes, intellect and opinion made my interest in them tenuous at best. I tried to care that the main characters affair with a married man made her already low self esteem plunge, but frankly I just didn't care. Typical millennial novel- well written but of no real substanceIf I'd known it was more like Bridget Jones' Diary My low rating has to do with the reviews which inaccurately compared this to James Joyce. Awesome Prep Book! Loved this book! I am attempting to self-study for the LSAT in June, and this book was the very first prep book I bought. It is a thin book with tons of information that is helpful and concise. It is both easy to understand and easy to follow along with, and the format is uncomplicated and helpful. Light and portable, it makes it easy to study. I liked all the test-taking tips it gave, and it explained every type of question in-depth.I bought a Kaplan LSAT prep book after I finished this one and I was very unimpressed. This book was superior to the Kaplan one in every way.I think the only thing that potential buyers should note is that this will not be the only prep book you will need to buy. There are practice questions, but not nearly enough, and there are no full-length tests. What I did to supplement was I bought a full-length test from last year and a Kaplan answer key that explained all the answers, as well as two other prep books that had practice questions.Great study and prep material. The breakdown of each the sample questions are really helpful. I gained a lot of insight from the different analyses of each answer choice and I benefitted from the diagrams and charts that help categorize the explanations. Overall, the prep book is an excellent prep test book that is helping me understand the test not just attempting to pass the test.REALLY SIMPLE AND EASY TO FOLLOW THEY FLAT OUT SAID WHAT TO DO ... For a group of kids looking to get into law school the possibility of getting a C was unbearable. Then the fit hit the shan!We were to write an extensive research paper using original source documents and primary resources. The limited number of materials available in our library suddenly began to "disappear." Promised rides to other library's vanished. It was a feeding frenzy, every one worked alone, kept to themselves, trusted np one and looked over their shoulder at all times.It was ugly!As a simple kid from a small town, I was heart broken. I had never witnessed that level of mean, self-serving behavior before. I reacted with hurt, anger, disillusionment and animosity toward the teacher and my peers.While I still don't like the method, reading The 48 Laws of Power has helped me understand what was going on and why. People are complicated. When we get pushed against the wall, when we feel that our ability to thrive is being threatened or see our desires within our reach, we sometimes resort to behaviors we would never consider at any other time. We do things that we look back on with tremendous remorse, regret and confusion. "How could I have done that!"But we cannot control what others will or won't do. What get's us in trouble, turns us into victims, is when we assume others are using the same playbook we are. In thinking they share our values, ethics, morality and sense of obligation to be a good person. When we do this we become somebody's prey. We need a good defense. We need to understand that there are people out there waiting to prey upon our trust and vulnerability.There are also those with weak character who will fail us when we need them most. It is not their intention, they are simply unclear on their values and make decision out of fear.So, I recommend reading The 48 Laws of Power. I do not suggest that it be used as a guide for conducting your business or relationships. The historical events and persons described in the book are some of the most shameless and heartless people to have ever lived. These are the bad people. This book teaches you how they think, how low they will go (lower than you can conceive) and helps you be aware of the evil that lurks in the hearts of us all. Like the football team it helps us create a game plan for our lives that is driven by our values, seeks the best in people, but is also vigilant in defending against the worst.
