Huh? How did this loser book get such good reviews. It is clumsy. And for those you who are, like myself, professors, just know that this thing is toxic. You’ll get to create all of your own homework questions. There are homework questions at the end of each chapter, but – surprise – students couldn’t do all of them from the narrative in the chapters. They’d have to make things up by themselves. Maybe that’s why the text includes answers to the questions on the next page. Yes, you read that right. The "homework" is already answered in the text itself, so of course assigning the questions is out of the question.

Give this thing a kick for me when you see it.

Filled with typographical errors, such as the one on page 385, in which the writers forgot to add 3 zeros to the end of a number, thus completely ruining the point they were trying to show us. I find it ironic that the error was in an equation designed to teach us how to accurately calculate costs, in order to make budgets. Each chapter is filled with more confusing formulas than college accounting 1 and 2 combined.

Not only are the in text questions only slightly related to the actual narrative presented in the relevant chapters, the questions from the test bank are similarly ambiguous. Most of my students were unable to complete more than half of the problems accurately because the book provides no clear basis for understanding of the material. Possibly the worst healthcare finance textbook I’ve encountered in my career.

This is not an completely unbiased review. Having "caught" a bad case of Type 2 diabetes a year ago I quickly discovered Dr. Bernstein’s Diabetes Solution: The Complete Guide to Achieving Normal Blood Sugars and followed his (still somewhat controversial) ketogenic diet plan, and began to devour as much information as possible on low-carb diets. Although I found inspiration from many places (including Good Calories, Bad Calories: Fats, Carbs, and the Controversial Science of Diet and Health (Vintage), and Dr Feinman’s blog), the more I read, the more I came across Phinney and Volek.

Their companion volume The Art and Science of Low Carbohydrate Living: An Expert Guide to Making the Life-Saving Benefits of Carbohydrate Restriction Sustainable and Enjoyable gave me the best possible practical guide and scientific justifcation for pursuing a low-carb lifestyle, and gave me the confidence to reduce my HbA1c from 10.2% to 4.5% (a properly non-diabetic number).

However, as a keen runner training for a half-marathon, I had still had significant concerns about attempting endurance events without resorting to carbohydrate fuelling that would disrupt my ketosis and aggravate my diabetes.
I am a great admirer of the work of the authors Dr. Jeff Volek and Dr. Stephen Phinney who I am privileged to call personal friends of mine. These two men have done some of the most extraordinary research into the health benefits of low-carb diets in the past few decades and deserve an enormous amount of respect for their contribution to the world. They teamed up with Duke researcher Dr. Eric Westman on New Atkins for a New You in 2010 and then released their phenomenal book The Art and Science of Low Carbohydrate Living in 2011.

As a follow-up book to the latter release, Volek/Phinney wanted to share some important information about how a high-fat, low-carb ketogenic diet is an excellent way to maximize athletic performance by advocating for athletes to get into a keto-adapted state in this book THE ART AND SCIENCE OF LOW CARBOHYDRATE PERFORMANCE. And for the niche audience of trainers and athletes wanting to choose the low-carb path to maximized performance, this book is excellent.

However, there is a section in this book that I believe includes invaluable information for EVERYONE who wants to be as healthy as they can possibly be. Beginning on page 89 in the "Personalization" chapter, Volek/Phinney discuss "finding your ketone zone" and encourage people to begin measuring their blood ketones using a monitor very similar to a blood glucose monitor.
For those new to low-carb but with some exercise experience, this book explains both how to follow a good low-carb diet in plain English, and also how to achieve great exercise results while doing so. For long-time low-carbers, it offer tips to fine-tune your keto-adaptation.

I think there’s a special audience for this book as well – women. Many women who’ve tried every other diet eventually try low-carb and are delighted with the results. Yet after a time they may plateau. How to break through? Exercise!

But how to exercise when low-carb? Most exercise books will tell you serious exercise is impossible without carbs. So a lot of women don’t expand beyond their usual walking or light yoga. This book should help reassure women that endurance and resistance exercise is possible & helpful. It definitely puts the "carbs are necessary for exercise" myth to rest.

How to use your already existing keto-adaptation to your maximum advantage? Low-carb books will tell you that you need to exercise, but they don’t help explain why exercise plus low-carb is uniquely effective. This book does.

Exactly how deep in ketosis are you now and would getting more deeply into it improve both your weight-loss and exercise? Drs. Volek and Phinney tell you how to figure this out for yourself with an inexpensive glucometer, which will remove a lot of frustrating trial-and-error.

Finally women can see how dialing their carbs up and down affects their level of ketosis, allowing them to measure and control their keto-adaptation to support their personal weight and exercise goals. The book closes with some snapshots of intense athletes, including a 60-year-old female low-carb marathon runner!

If you are new to guitar, and don’t know how to read music, this book is for you. It is straightforward, and simple using the tablature method rather than standard music theory-which will give you a basic start on beginning to understand reading music and music theory later on if you choose. By taking some time doing the exercises, I was strumming away faster than I thought and have also learned that their are a number of music sheet books with tab measures which can let you go on beyond this book and play a lot of different forms of music. It is geared toward the absolute beginner, and is not overwhelming. I can say that it has helped me, but like anything else it does take practice.

Dave Brewster has put together an easy to use guide for individual learning and small group instruction. The diagrams are easy to read and explain even in a bilingual English/Spanish situation. This book gives a thorough orientation to acoustic & electric guitars and teaches the basics for tuning, playing chords, strumming patterns and some notation reading. I appreciate the teaching of relative tuning for times when an electronic tuner is not available.

Yep i am 53 years old bought this for myself already playing the guitar redcommend for any age. Great Item

The Thing About Jellyfish Audible – Unabridged ridged

A stunning debut about how grief can open the world in magical ways. After her best friend dies in a drowning accident, Suzy is convinced that the true cause of the tragedy was a rare jellyfish sting. Retreating into a silent world of imagination, she crafts a plan to prove her theory – even if it means traveling the globe alone. Suzy’s achingly heartfelt journey explores life, death, the astonishing wonder of the universe…and the potential for love and hope right next door.

An emotionally intense story is told here. This is a juvenile, but it certainly isn’t a typical one. It’s a multilevel novel aimed a bit more at girls but should affect guys too. The basic theme has to do with dealing with the death of a best friend and schoolmate. However, there’s a lot more. Suzy is convinced that her friend was stung by a jellyfish and sets out to prove her theory. She’s obviously a very bright student and is being well taught how to carry out a scientific project.

Suzy is a very complex character and one the reader can love. The novel is strongly educational while entertaining. Suzy tells her story in the first person.

There’s a lot here also for parents who choose to also read the book. This is a sensitive masterpiece that I can recommend to child and parent alike.

The Thing About Jellyfish is a touching tale about a young girl whose best (and only) friend drowns while on holiday. As the story progresses we discover that Suzy’s grief is much more than just the loss of her friend, but frustration at something happening without apparent reason, and regret about the things that took place between them before her friend died. Such a lot for a young soul to carry. I finished this last night, but I’m still feeling emotional about it. I’m so pleased I discovered this book.

I feel like I’ve just had a life changing lesson in jellyfish, amongst other important things, from a very smart 12 year old. I liked her outlook on life, the world and the people around her. I admired her strength and confidence, despite not being popular at school. There was something special within her that I wish I’d had when I was being bullied at school. Perhaps I did have it, but didn’t realise it at the time. I had very frizzy hair too, and I wanted to tell her, it’s okay Frizz Ease and hair straighteners will become your best friends once you’re a little older. You can control the frizz.

I suspected this book was going to make me cry before I even started it, I just didn’t realise I’d need a whole box of tissues. What a beautiful, delightful, yet emotional tale.

Although I enjoy religious and spiritual books, I loved how this had the same emotional impact on me without the religious aspect. I was surprised how learning scientific facts about jellyfish, with a bit of philosophical thought thrown in, could be so emotional and thought provoking.

This is like Stephen King’s Carrie for kids!

The Thing About Jellyfish is a great story for older children, young teenagers, and it seems this 37 year old girl very much enjoyed it too.

I would like to thank the publisher, Little, Brown Books for Young Readers for allowing me a copy of this book via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

Suzy is dealing with the death by drowning of her former best friend by indulging in self-imposed silence and a stubborn refusal to talk to anyone. This exploration of grief and denial is beautifully written with graceful notes and arresting observations on every page. It is also over 300 pages of precocious, self-absorbed navel gazing by a girl who is apparently unconcerned about and untouched by the emotional carnage she is leaving in her wake as a consequence of her behavior. Mom, Dad, sibling, friends, teachers, and so on are just collateral victims of Suzy’s journey.

At the outset I alternated among: appreciating the tone and style of the writing and the beautiful phrIDg and pace, checking to see how many more pages I had left, and wanting to slap Suzy in the head with a cold wet fish.

Reviews and blurbs emphasize the elegiac passages, the jellyfish angle/conceit, and Suzy’s marvelous search for personal and universal meaning as she navigates her own inner space. O.K. as far as that goes. Suzy is also cruel, irresponsible and a major narcissistic drama queen. This all makes the book interesting, maddening, annoying and compelling.

I guess my point is that this isn’t an emotionally satisfying trip down memory lane with Scout in "To Kill A Mockingbird". This is a roller coaster ride through the mixed up and complicated head of a conflicted and sometimes childish and dense twelve year old girl. It isn’t all gauzy and upbeat and for all of its mild and mellow passages it is challenging and in many ways confrontational. So, if there was ever a read-it-yourself-and-see-what-you-think, this is it.

Please note that I picked up a free copy of the ARC of this book at the 2015 ALA Convention. Apart from that I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.
